Perennials Perennials are becoming more important to gardeners because of their staying power. They are plants you set out once, yet they return year after year for your enjoyment. Perennials are often those plants that can be divided, shared and passed on from generation to generation. They do best when they are incorporated into the landscape with other plants. While shrubs provide the backbone to your beds, perennials will contribute color at certain times of the year. Mixing groupings of the same type of perennials will give your landscape a nice splash of color. Most often, perennials die back in the Winter and emerge again in the Spring. You can also use perennials in a “cutting garden.” Plant a few evergreen shrubs for interest but allow most of the bed for perennials. Select varieties that will bloom at different times of the year so something will always be in bloom. The charm of a “cutting garden” is the fact that it changes month by month, bringing new blooms to enjoy. We will be hosting a free clinic in every store on Monrovia® Perennials on Saturday, May 22nd at 10:15 am. Join us to learn more about gardening with perennials! Earth-Kind™ Many gardeners are looking for ways to get the most out of gardening and landscape enjoyment while preserving and protecting our environment. Earth-Kind™ gardening uses research-proven techniques to achieve this and it can be done in any home garden. The objective of Earth-Kind™ gardening is to combine the best of organic and traditional gardening and landscaping principles. Begin with proper flower bed preparation. Amend your soils with organic compost and expanded shale to open up and aerate clay soils. Use seeds and plants which have been proven to thrive in our Texas weather and always top-dress all plantings with a 2 to 3 inch layer of mulch. Earth-Kind™ is an important designation given to select roses by the Texas A&M University Agriculture program. Earth-Kind™ Roses have been through rigorous statewide testing and evaluation by a team of horticultural experts. They tend to be drought tolerant, disease resistant and overall low maintenance. These roses produce abundant blooms and beautiful foliage. Our most popular Earth-Kind™ variety is ‘Knock-Out®’ which will grace your landscape with cherry red blooms until the first hard frost. We will be hosting a free clinic in every store on Earth-Kind™ Gardening on Saturday, April 17th at 10:15 am. Join us to learn more about this environmentally friendly way to garden! Spring Vegetables and Herbs This is the year to grow your own fruits and vegetables! Our most popular clinic in 2009 was our “Spring Vegetables and Herbs” clinic and we will be hosting two clinics on that topic in March. Many positive things come from growing a garden. Working in a garden can help to relieve stress and increase your overall activity level. Sunlight can improve sleep, deter depression and promote a stronger immune system. Growing your own garden allows you to control what fertilizers, pesticides and fungicides are used during the raising of your crops. But, most importantly, vegetables and fruits grown in a home garden tend to be more flavorful and nutritious! When selecting a site for your gardens keep these requirements in mind. All vegetables need at least 6 hours of direct sunlight each day. Eight to 10 hours each day is ideal. The soil should be fertile and easy to work. Improve the texture by adding organic compost material. Container gardening is perfect if you have space or soil limitations. Gardens will need at least one inch of water per week including rainfall. Pruning January is a good time to evaluate your gardens and start planning for the Spring. Prepare a sketch of your landscape complete with all permanent fixtures including the house, sidewalks, fences and trees. Keep notes of what did well and what needs to be replaced. Remember, your landscape is a continual work in progress! Now is the time to prune fruit trees and grapevines. Shade trees and evergreen shrubs can be trimmed to maintain shape and to remove damaged or low lying branches. Do not top Crape Myrtles; only prune to remove damaged branches. Trim summer blooming shrubs and vines to tidy their appearance. Leave a smooth cut flush with the trunk or branch from which you pruned. Apply pruning paint to cuts larger than a pinkie to prevent diseases and insect infestations. For more information, please join us for FREE in-store clinics regarding gardening topics.
